Marion takes down Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON — Marion’s volleyball team swept past the Lady Rams in two games Tuesday night.

The Lady Wildcats won the match 25-10, 25-19.

“We came out determined,” Marion coach Lauren Blumhorst said. “Especially in the first set. We came out determined, on a mission, and we didn’t let the ball hit the ground.”

Mt. Vernon struggled to build its attack and was vulnerable defensively against the Lady Wildcats. Marion used three aces from Jackie Rone to jump to a 7-0 lead. The Lady Rams never made the first game close.

“We couldn’t pass the ball to save our lives out there,” Mt. Vernon coach Angie Carroll said. “I don’t know where our concentration was, but hopefully we get it back by next week.”

Marion’s biggest lead in the game came at 22-5 after Erin Dodd and McKenzie Johnston teamed together for a block.

“We had no teamwork tonight,” Carroll said. “I don’t know where it went. I don’t know what’s going on, but it is just not there and that’s what killed us. We had zero teamwork tonight.”

The second game didn’t start much better for Mt. Vernon as Marion rode a wave of momentum to win the opening five points. Mt. Vernon’s first sideout came with a Kelby Kujawa kill to make the score 5-1. Kujawa led the Lady Rams with two kills. Mt. Vernon stayed within about four points until the midway point of the game.

Marion’s Katie Comp knocked back-to-back kills to give the Lady Wildcats a 17-11 edge. The Lady Rams closed the deficit back to four after a Kujawa kill followed by a Marion hitting error. Marion open its lead to eight at 22-14. The Lady Rams responded with a rally that closed the deficit to five at 24-19. Molly Koester helped the Lady Rams during the run with a kill. But Marion’s Kara Van Horn ended the match with a kill.

Mt. Vernon is 15-8 this season overall and 3-3 in the South Seven Conference. Marion is 24-8 and 5-1 in conference. The Lady Rams host Centralia on Monday.
