Waltonville’s boys basketball team rode a big start to beat Zeigler-Royalton 71-62 Thursday morning at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.
Waltonville scored the opening 16 points of the game and had a 24-2 edge after the first quarter.
“It’s tough to keep the intensity whenever you jump out to such a big lead,” Waltonville coach Brian Gamber said. “But I felt like our guys did a really, really good job of coming out in that first quarter and really setting the tempo.”
Jordan Hale led the Spartans with 28 points, and Trey Witges added 27. Matt Rogers and Hunter Coggins added five points each. Austin Zahm had three.
Waltonville finished 26 of 31 from the free throw line.
