Illinois growers get corn in the ground — finally

ST. LOUIS (AP) — After a soggy spring, Illinois corn growers have finally gotten their crops in the ground. Now, as many of them turn their sights on already delayed planting of soybeans, they’re hoping the weather in coming months cuts them some slack.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Illinois corn growers have wrapped up their planting for the season, in some cases weeks behind schedule.

In southern Illinois, Richard Borgsmiller is taking what he can get. He says he’s settled for planting just half of the 300 acres of corn he normally puts in the ground and will grow soybeans in the remaining portion.

If the weather cooperates in coming months, and there’s not a significant freeze in September, the USDA’s Brad Schwab says corn yields may be down only slightly.
