Conservation police looking for drunk boaters

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — State officials are stepping up monitoring for drunk boaters this holiday weekend.

The Department of Natural Resources’ police force will be on the lookout for boaters operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol in a project called “Operation Dry Water.”

DNR law enforcement chief Rafael Gutierrez says alcohol is one of the leading factors in recreational boating accidents nationally.

Operating under the influence is punishable by six months to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

Operation Dry Water is a joint program of DNR, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
