CARBONDALE, (AP) — Southern Illinois University’s flagship campus is seeing a nearly 1,300-students drop in enrollment this spring.
WSIU Radio (http://bit.ly/WwllzC ) reports the official spring enrollment for SIU’s Carbondale campus stands at about 17,100. That’s down from about 18,400 in January 2012.
This semester’s enrollment is also down by nearly 1,700 students from the fall semester. University officials say a large number of December graduates contributed to that decline.
Chancellor Rita Cheng says full-year projections are made with the official fall enrollment, so no budget or staffing adjustments will be made for the remainder of the spring semester.
Cheng also says SIUC is seeing steady progress. She says the university has received nearly 12,000 new freshman applications for Fall 2013.
Overall, SIUC enrollment has dropped by more than 2,600 students since fall 2011.
