CHICAGO (AP) — A U.S. Army Reservist from suburban Chicago has been honored with the military's prestigious Legion of Merit award.

Sen. Mark Kirk presented the award to Col. Joseph Noferi of Lincolnwood on Monday.

Noferi has served 30 years as an Army Reservist, including stints in Italy, the United Kingdom and with the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Kirk says Noferi has proven himself "an invaluable asset to our nation."

He says under Noferi's leadership the Chicago Joint Reserve Unit became the highest per-capita developer of Foreign Military Intelligence Collection Activity accounts. The accounts provided crucial information to the military in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Congress established the Legion of Merit award in 1942. It's presented to members of the armed forces for outstanding service and achievement.
