Vandalia scrambles to save band director's job

VANDALIA (AP) — A southern Illinois community believes plans to cut their high school band program and its director's job aren't harmonious, and there's a concerted effort to save it.

St. Louis' KSDK-TV (http://on.ksdk.com/11JKnAf ) reports that an effort in 7,000-resident Vandalia is intent on raising $55,000 meant to save Tony Hicks' job, which is in jeopardy because of state cuts.

Many around the Fayette County town value the band Hicks has headed for six years. They note that this year seven seniors are college-bound on music scholarships, and they credit the man who students call "Papa Hicks" for that.

Part of the fundraising effort includes a citywide garage sale and a 5K run.

Vandalia is about 70 miles east of St. Louis.
