Quinn to appoint panel to study U of I admissions

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Tribune reports that Gov. Pat Quinn will appoint a seven-member commission to review the University of Illinois admissions practices.

The move comes after the newspaper reported that the university kept a clout list of well-connected applicants, some of whom were admitted over more qualified applicants.

Quinn is expected to announce Wednesday that the commission will be led by retired federal Judge Abner Mikva and have 60 days to complete its work.

The Tribune also says it will legally challenge U of Is refusal to turn over test scores and grade-point averages for applicants on the clout list.

U of I President Joseph White says releasing the documents would violate students privacy, even though they wouldnt be identified.
