MASCOUTAH (AP) — Director Tim Cantwell of MidAmerica St. Louis Airport has some big plans for a load of asparagus.
In an experiment set to begin Thursday morning, a DC-10 loaded with four tons of asparagus grown in Peru and shipped from Colombia is scheduled to land at MidAmerica.
Since last year, MidAmerica has been making its mark in the international cargo world with the words “MidAmerica Fresh” — its advertised tag line for flowers flown in straight from South America.
Now Cantwell wants to place the “MidAmerica Fresh” label on South American vegetables.
Cantwell wants to sell the idea that flying food directly into MidAmerica rather than Miami — the traditional entry port — will save time and prolong the shelf life of perishable goods to be distributed across the Midwest.
