COLUMBIA (AP) — Authorities say a man trying to flee on foot after wrecking his car in southwestern Illinois ended up in a hospital after leaping over a guardrail and falling 50 feet.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/YIndHI ) reports that the 21-year-old motorist from Waterloo was flown by helicopter to a St. Louis hospital after the accident Monday night at a ramp from Illinois Route 3 to Interstate 255, near Columbia. His medical status was not immediately clear Tuesday.

Authorities say he jumped over a guardrail after the wreck and fell onto railroad tracks below.

There's no immediate word on any charges.
