CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County prosecutors have charged two alleged street gang members with first-degree murder in the shooting death of another alleged gang member.
Seventeen-year-old Javier Garza of Elmwood Park on Tuesday was ordered held without bond in the Sunday death of 14-year-old Michael Orozco. Judge Donald Panarese ordered 19-year-old Damien Garza of Chicago held in lieu of $1 million bond. Family members say the two men are unrelated.
Assistant State's Attorney Joell Zahr says the alleged shooter, Javier Garza, flashed gang signs and then gunned down Michael as payback for his father's 2001 murder.
Authorities say after Michael was shot three times in the back, the gunman fled in a van with two other men. The suspects were arrested when the vehicle crashed. The third man was released without being charged.
