FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS — —
A coroner says a southwestern Illinois police chief who was suspended after being accused of felony misconduct has committed suicide.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone says 56-year-old J.D. Roth died Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Fairview Heights home.
Prosecutors charged the former Caseyville police chief last month with misconduct, alleging he misused a pickup truck seized as part of a drug case and made personal use of luggage bought with village funds.
Each charge was punishable by a possible five years in prison and $25,000 fine.
Roth had been on paid administrative leave since the investigation was made public in March.
Caseyville is a 4,300-resident village just east of St. Louis.
