Fairview Heights police sergeant cleared of DUI

BELLEVILLE — BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a drunken-driving charge against a southwestern Illinois police sergeant a day before his trial was to begin.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/NlBoxU) reports Thursday's move by St. Clair County prosecutors came as no surprise. That's because a judge in May rescinded the suspension of Fairview Heights police officer James Krummrich's driver's license after finding there was no credible evidence the officer was drunk when arrested on St. Patrick's Day.

Prosecutors say in a court filing they had no choice but to drop the charge after reviewing the judge's ruling and Belleville police's investigation.

Police arrested the 47-year-old Krummrich after he was involved in a two-car accident.

The state's attorney is declining comment about Thursday's action, saying a traffic citation accusing Krummrich of improper merging into traffic is pending.
