MT. VERNON — — No babies were born in Mt. Vernon on New Year’s Day, but the first to be welcomed to the world arrived early Wednesday.

Zoey Honey Renee Greenwood was born 7:55 a.m. Wednesday at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. She is the daughter of Mary Jo Letke and Jerry Greenwood of Iuka.

She is the granddaughter of Adolph and Christine Letke of Centralia and Delbert and Arlene Greenwood of Iuka.

Zoey is the youngest of nine siblings altogether, said her mother, Mary Jo. She was due Jan. 1, but she arrived via C-section the next day.

Mary Jo said her pregnancy with Zoey was smooth sailing.

“I didn’t have too many problems with her, thank goodness,” she said.

Though a little extra hustle and bustle always surrounds the first baby of the year, Mary Jo said there wasn’t too much extra excitement from her family. A few family members, including some of Zoey’s brothers and sisters, have come to visit already.

Many of the new baby’s family members are calling her Honey, Mary Jo said.

“Her great-great-grandma passed away in November, and we called her Grandma Honey,” she said. “She was 95.”

Mary Jo said “Zoey” was chosen as her first name because she felt it was different and not-too-popular.

Mom and baby are expected to return home to Iuka on Friday or Saturday.
