Fitness program emphasizes bicycle riding

The second new youth fitness program is getting underway at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Pedaling for Fitness started June 24, and will continue through July 16. The program is a partner to the Stepping Out for Fitness program which recently concluded. The Stepping Out for Fitness program allowed youth to use pedometers to measure the number of miles walked at Veterans Park. The goal for children was to walk 30 miles in 30 days. The top walker traveled 60 miles.

The Pedaling for Fitness program goal is to encourage physical fitness in youth while helping them learn to set goals and achieve personal goals for fitness.

"The city has been working hard building a series of bike paths, multi-use trails and shared use trails throughout the city to provide save avenues for our bikers," information from the city states. "You are definitely encouraged to discover and use these trails."

Pedaling for Fitness is for youth ages 9 through 14. Youth sign up for the program at the Parks and Recreation Office at the Rolland Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park Odometers are installed on the bicycle of the participant, who must sign a pledge stating they will be the one to put the miles on the bicycle. Each child must have an adult partner who will accompany the participant. Participants check in once a week to log in mileage.

A special award ceremony will be held at Veterans Park on July 23. Participants who achieve 150 miles or more and four recorded check-ins will have a choice of local gift cards as prizes. Two grand prizes will be awarded to the boy and the girl who ride the most miles — a new bicycle,
