MT. VERNON — A celebration for Hazel Riley's 100th birthday at Mt. Vernon Heart Institute on Wednesday was filled with laughter and chatter from family, friends and the staff at the institute.
Hazel Riley, a sharp and warm-hearted lady, was all smiles with the turnout of everyone in attendance.
First meeting Riley you would never guess that she was 100 years old. She is a woman with so much charm and a sweet disposition.
Riley was greeted and wished happy birthday by several people and the flash of cameras was coming from all angles, almost as though she was a Hollywood starlet.
Riley grew up and lived in the Mt. Vernon and Dix area all her life. She had four sisters and three brothers that have passed away.
Riley had two husbands that she was married to for 47 years each. Roy Chanstin was her first husband and Oscar Riley was her second. They are both deceased.
She credited her long and beautiful life to being married to those two men and hard work.
Riley never had any children of her own but has been surrounded by the love of her second husband's children and grandchildren.
Riley's occupation before retiring was working at the local shoe factory for 42 years. When she wasn't working at the factory she enjoyed doing needle work, such as crocheting and quilt making.
When asked what her fondest memory was Riley simply said, "All of them, I cherish them all."
In attendance at the celebration was Riley's cardiologist Dr. Mohammed Haseeb. Haseeb said that Riley suffered a heart attack at the age of 84 and has lived more than 16 years after the attack because of early treatment.
The message Hasseb wants to send to the community is you must recognize the symptoms of a heart attack.
"Get treated on time and see your cardiologist on a regular basis," he said.
Hasseb stated that the likelihood of leaving the hospital with minimal damage to the heart is very high these days with early detection and state-of-the-art treatment options.
He hopes the community continues to attend the programs provided by Good Samaritan Hospital about heart disease and early detection.
