Death under investigation

BLUFORD — An apparent vehicle-train accident has resulted in fatal injuries to a Wayne City man.

According to a news release from Coroner Eddie Joe Marks, he was contacted at 4:18 a.m. Saturday by the sheriff's department of a vehicle-train accident in the 1300 block of West Sixth Street in Bluford. Upon arrival, Marks discovered the body of Shawn Betts, 35, in the front seat of his Honda Element.

Betts, of the 200 block of East Section Line Road in Wayne City, was pronounced dead at 5 a.m., the coroner said.

Details of the death are still under investigation.

    The Jefferson County 4-H Fair Dog and Cat Shows were held Saturday morning outside the University of Illinois Extension Office in Mt. Vernon. Thirteen dogs and seven cats were judged as part of the competition. Animals were evaluated on factors like care and handling, and obedience. The fair continues today with a Sheep Show at 8 a.m., a Swine Show at 7:30 p.m., and Farm Bureau Night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These events will all be held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds behind Rend Lake College.
