Chemical fire extinguished

MT. VERNON — — Jefferson Fire Protection District responded to a report of a chemical fire at 17744 E. Illinois Highway 15 just before 10 a.m. this morning.

According to Chief Robert Beal, the fire was under control about 10:07 a.m. The main chemical involved in the fire was ammonia which accidentally mixed with another chemical and started smoking then subsequently caught on fire. The fire was quickly put out and no structural damage to the facility was reported.
