Railway fatality

CNHI

BONNIE — — A Mt. Vernon man is dead after he was struck by a Union Pacific freight train south of Bonnie late Saturday morning.

Coroner Eddie Joe Marks identified the victim as 27-year-old Dominique D. McCrae of the 400 block of South 15th Street. Marks said McCrae and two other people were fishing on the railroad trestle at Atchison Creek. McCrae got off the trestle to the north — further away from his fishing gear. He then went back to get his fishing gear but was struck by the train, and he landed in the creek.

Marks said McCrae could not swim, which is probably why he did not attempt to get off the trestle.

"There is not enough room on the trestle for anybody," Marks said.

McCrae was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m. Marks said McCrae died of blunt force trauma. The body was taken to Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
