Officials urge residents to stay off roads

MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to refrain from travel if possible due to weather conditions.

"If you have to get out, please remain very cautious and slow down," information from MVEMA states. "Give plenty of tiome to get to your destination. Watch out for the snow plows and give them plenty of room to work."

About 8 inches of snowfall fell overnight, covering sleet and freezing rain. City and county and state road crews are working to clear roadways. City crews worked Thursday pre-treating bridges and problem intersections.

For those who must travel, road condition reports are available in Illinois by calling the Illinois Department of Transportation at 1-800-452-4368; for Missouri conditions, call 1-888-275-6636; for Indiana, 1-800-261-7623; and in Kentucky, conditions are available by calling 1-866-737-3767.
