City officially awarded Tank of the Year

MT. VERNON — — A new distinction for the King City was celebrated Monday — the home of Tank of the Year.

Representatives of Tnemec, Tri-Kote, HMG and Coating Solutions were on hand to present the City Council with the award, which sports an etched picture of the Tank of the Year, located behind Times Square Mall.

More than 1,500 tanks were initially nominated for the award, according to Doug Hanson of Tnemec. About 200 tanks were in the final round of the contest, which allowed people to go online and vote for their favorite water tank. Tnemec is an industrial paint coatings supplier.

In addition to the honorary title, the Mt. Vernon Times Square water tank is featured on the cover of the 2014 promotional calendar for the company.

"We introduced the Tank of the Year about seven years ago," Hanson said. "The honor went to a tank in Florida last year. ... With the rebranding of Mt. Vernon, this tank really stood out. Before we came to give the award, we visited it in person, and it looks better in person than any picture can show."

The nomination for the award was made by HMG Engineers, which provided the tower engingeering design, TriKote Industrial Coatings, which painted the tank when it was complete and Coating Solutions which provided the paint. Representatives of all the companies were on hand for the presentation.

About 9,000 calendars are distributed by the company, as well as a newsletter featuring the tank, which has a 25,000 distribution.

"This has been fun for all of us," Mayor Mary Jane Chesley said. "We have enjoyed the national recognition."
