Fire destroys mobile home

WOODLAWN —  — A fire of undetermined cause and origin destroyed a mobile home in this Jefferson County village Monday morning.

The initial call came in shortly after 9 a.m. The mobile home, unoccupied at the time, was in the 200 block of Casey Street in the West Haven Mobile Home Park, west of Woodlawn High School.

According to radio reports, flames were showing to the rear of the residence when Woodlawn firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:08 a.m. The fire was fully involved when Jefferson Fire Protection District firefighters arrived a few minutes later. Irvington and Waltonville fire departments were also requested on the scene to help battle the blaze.

There were conflicting reports initially that a young baby was in the mobile home, however, that report turned out to be false.

The home had been occupied by adults Charlena Mendez and Gregorio Paxtron and three children — two girls ages 11 and 7 — and a 3-month-old male. Mendez told authorities that she had dropped her girls off at school and when she returned she saw smoke coming from the mobile home.

The family lost all of their belongings in the fire. Donations are being accepted on behalf of the family through Woodlawn Community First Bank.

The American Red Cross was notified of the fire and was to be contacting the family, according to a deputy on the fire scene. The victims told the deputy they had other family members where they could stay in the immediate future.

Ryan Clinton of the Jefferson Fire Protection District said the cause of the fire is undetermined and will remain that way since the mobile home is considered a total loss. He indicated the older model mobile home was not covered by insurance.
