Illinois 37 reopened

CNHI

MT. VERNON — — UPDATE:

Illinois State Police say all roadways in the area of the overturned tanker truck are now back open.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A tanker overturned at the Illinois Route 37-Interstate 64 interchange around 5 a.m. today.

Illinois State Police, Jefferson Fire Protection District and the Mt. Vernon Fire Department HazMat team are at the location.

Both lanes of Illinois Highway 37 were closed to traffic as emergency crews worked the accident. Southbound traffic on Illinois 37 is being re-routed west to Bethel Road and back to Veterans Memorial Drive; northbound traffic is being turned around at the I-64 interchange.

According to the Illinois State Police, the tanker was hauling ethanol, which is considered a hazardous material. Ethanol has an isolation distance of 150 feet from an existing spill, however, as a precaution, the ISP is isolating an area in a 1,000 foot radius around the scene while the tanker is emptied and uprighted.

I-64 eastbound traffic is being diverted at the I-57/64 split. I-64 westbound traffic is being diverted at the Belle Rive exit. Illinois Route 37 is closed both north and southbound for the 1,000 feet. The closure began at 7:45 a.m. and is expected to last until about 10 a.m.
