MT. VERNON — — The Mt. Vernon Primary Center hosted the ABC 5k Fun Run at the park on Saturday
The main purpose of the event was to raise money for the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Program at the school.
"Since 5k races are pretty popular we thought we would try it out as our fundraiser for PBIS," said Ellen Gibbs, the assistant principal at the Primary Center.
Information states that the PBIS program emphasis on proactive strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments.
"The students learn that good behavior is reinforced with rewards and extra activities like a school carnival, field day, popsicle parties and much more," Gibbs stated.
All the proceeds made from the event will benefit PBIS for future activities. The race was able to raise $1,800. The total amount was made through registration and several individual donations.
"This is really going to help us out a lot for future PBIS activities," Gibbs said. "Our community really came together and helped out, we had 25 Primary Center staff members who volunteered as well as volunteers from Kohl's," Gibbs said.
During the event two races took place including a fun run for children. The participants ranged from kindergarten through third grade. The children ran half a lap around the track and received medals for their participation,
"All the kids were so proud of themselves, some of them even wore their medals to school the following Monday," Gibbs said. "One of my favorite parts of the day was seeing all the kids lined up at the starting line."
The runners of the 5k ranged from the age of 13 and over. The participants of the 5k ran three laps. The overall top male runner of the day was Robert Hulbert and the top female runner was Jenna Reiter.
Gibbs said the race had 66 runners total. She said the staff and herself included were pleased with the turn out. Plans for another 5k fundraiser is already being discussed.
"It was a little hot during the race so maybe next year we will have the fundraiser closer to Halloween and have the kids dress up," Gibbs said.
