Variety show entertains families

SPRINGFIELD — — Popcorn Pete’s Variety Show entertained area residents and children of all ages on Friday at the Mt. Vernon Township High School auditorium.

The theme of the show was "Popcorn Pete’s Extreme Makeover,” which featured skits from the Justice League, Frozen, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, My Little Pony, Lego and Scooby Doo.

The Drama Club and the Special Olympics/Project UNIFY, two organizations from the high school, collaborated to put on the program.

The two sponsors, Mary Beth Mezo, a sponsor for the MVTHS Drama Club and Megan Clodi, director for the Special Olympics/Project UNIFY, worked along side the students in every aspect of the program.

"Some of the students that are involved in the show now used to come to the Popcorn Pete when they were young," Codi said. "When we were picking out skits to do some of them wanted to do a Kim Possible skit which was an old skit from when they came to the show."

The production's main focus was to teach life lessons with comedic skits.

"The focus of the extreme makeover is not just the exterior of someone, but show there is more to someone than just the outside. If we can focus more on that then it will make a huge impact on society," Clodi said.

The cast and crew accomplished this through comedic skits. All the skits in the production were written by the students involved in the show.

"Children learn through comedy and humor," Clodi said.

Several in attendance have been to a Popcorn Pete production in the past. But for some in the audience this was their first time attending the show.

Brenna Timmons attended her first Popcorn Pete show as part of her birthday celebration. She said she was excited to see the characters of Frozen. Emily Timmons, the mother of Brenna, said she feels it is important to bring your children to events like Popcorn Pete.
