Thursday Night Live kicks off season

MT. VERNON — — Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is kicking off its Thursday Night Live season on May 30.

"This is the second year it's been named Thursday Night Live, but we are in the third year of remaining open on Thursday evenings through the summer," said Sarah Sledge, Cedarhurst Director of Communications. "This year we have entertainment and events planned for every Thursday Night Live."

The first Thursday Night Live of the season will kick off in conjunction with a Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event, which will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on the back patio with live music from Brett, Rolland, Nick and Roger.

Part of the evening will also be celebrated with Books on Fire! a sculpture retiring event for two sculpture works of artist Alma Petry.

"The sculptures are the one in front of Mitchell Museum on the island and the the other is by the Shrode Art Center," Sledge explained. "They were both created by Alma Petrie, a local artist, who also has an exhibit opening this weekend in the Shrode Art Center."

The art was designed in paper to be subjected to the natural elements in preparation for the burning as a compliment to the exhibit "Brave New World: The Art of the Book in the Digital Age."

"They have been out there for two months, weathering like things do," Sledge said. "They are changing their form and shape in the sun and rain, drying and re-wetting alters them. This will be a ceremonial burning, very purposeful. Alma will have a statment about how she created the piece through its life cycle and its relationship to the cycle of books."

The sculpture extinguishing ceremony will take place at 6 p.m.

The event is free to the public.
