Drug sweep nets 13 arrests

MT. VERNON — — Three people were arrested in a 30-minute time frame Wednesday morning as the joint narcotics division of the Mt. Vernon Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office conducted a drug sweep.

Officers from both departments were seeking to serve 20 warrants, and captured the three suspects all in a southeast neighborhood. The Narcotics Division was attempting to serve warrants all related to methamphetamine-related offenses, according to Detective Ronnie Almaroad of the Mt. Vernon Police Department.

By mid-afternoon, approximately 13 of the 20 individuals had been taken into custody, according to Chief of Police Chris Mendenall.

Arrested during the first hour of the sweep were: Roy Baker, 44, with two counts of unlawful delivery of methamphetamine; Amanda Albright, 33, charged with unlawful delivery of methamphetamine; and Crystal Bain, 30, charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance — methamphetamine.

Eight other individuals arrested and their charges include:

Christopher Williams, delivery of meth; Wilbert Nailing, delivery of cannabis; Elaine Moore, delivery of crack cocaine; Jacob Wagner, delivery of meth; Karen Garrison, delivery of meth; Kyle Badgett, delivery of meth; Larry York, delivery of meth; and Rhiannon Cates, delivery of meth.

Ages and addresses were not immediately available on those suspects. The remaining three suspects have not been identified by MVPD.

"We've had an increase in meth activity recently," Almaroad said as the sweep began. "Most of our investigations have been breaking over the last several months. We want to take out these drug offenders."

Almaroad said this latest detail was the third in the last three months, resulting in nearly 70 individuals being arrested for drug-related offenses.

"This is to make a point that we're hot and heavy after the drug crowd," Almaroad said.
