Toy Drive Party to benefit Toys for Kids

MT. VERNON — — Two stores at Times Square Mall are teaming up with Toys for Kids of Jefferson County to hold a Toy Drive Party on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The mall will stay open after normal hours, from 5 to 7 p.m., for the Toy Drive Party. My Favorite Toy Store is offering 20 percent off donation purchases, and the Mt. Vernon Maurices will take 15 percent off the purchase of every shopper who donates a toy during those hours.

Maurices will also be serving snacks during the special after-hours event, information states.

“It’s a way to get a discount, too,” said Laci Copple, Toys for Kids volunteer. “It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Toys for Kids of Jefferson County is in need of toys and gift items for older age groups, from ages 10 to 14, Copple said. Toys for younger children are piled high in the Toys for Kids headquarters, but gift items for children age 10 to 12 are few and far between, she said.

“We have more older kids registered than usual,” Copple added. “The difference in the amount of toys we have is staggering, even for stocking stuffers.”

The organization is asking for toys of about $20 or $25 value.

Registration for the toy giveaway continues throughout November.

Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17; 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24; 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

The giveaway is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7.

Children from newborns to 14 years old may be registered for the program, said Toys for Kids member Lacey Copple.

To qualify, a parent or guardian must present a Medicaid card, she said.
